Adjustable shredded memory foam pillow

Start by fluffing, then adjust gradually.

If your adjustable shredded memory foam pillow feels too tall or too full, removing a small amount of fill can change its profile. If it feels uneven, redistributing the foam may be enough. Try that before taking anything out.

This walkthrough applies to the Alexa Sleep Shredded Memory Foam Pillow, whose fill can be removed. It does not apply to the fixed molded core in the Cooling Gel Pillow.

What you need

  • A clean, dry work surface.
  • A clean, dry bag or container for any fill you remove.
  • Your usual mattress and pillowcase for checking the feel.

Keep track of the amount you remove. You do not need a precise measurement to begin; the useful comparison is between a small change and how the pillow feels afterward.

Adjust the pillow in six steps.

  1. Fluff it first. Lift and gently work the pillow so compacted pieces loosen and the fill spreads more evenly.
  2. Try the original feel. Put the pillow on your mattress and settle into your usual position. Decide whether the problem is height, unevenness or simply a preference for a different material.
  3. Open the fill compartment. Work over your clean surface so loose foam is easy to collect.
  4. Remove a small handful. Put the removed foam in your clean, dry container. Save it so the change is reversible.
  5. Close and redistribute. Close the pillow securely, spread the remaining fill evenly and put the pillowcase back on.
  6. Compare before repeating. Try the pillow again. Remove another small amount only if it still feels too full, or return some saved fill if you went too far.

Troubleshoot the feel.

What you noticeFirst adjustment to try
Too high or overfilledRemove a small amount of foam, then redistribute what remains.
Too low after an adjustmentPut back some of the clean, dry fill you saved.
Lumpy or unevenBreak up compacted areas gently and spread the fill before removing more.
Different when the pillowcase is onCheck that the case is not squeezing the pillow tightly.
The height is better, but the material still feels wrongCompare a different core design; removing fill does not turn memory foam into latex.

Keep the fill and cover separate during care.

The removable cover can be washed according to its care label. The foam fill should not go in a washing machine or tumble dryer. Follow the instructions supplied with your pillow for spot cleaning and allow any cleaned material to dry fully before using or storing it.

Keep saved fill sealed, clean and dry. Do not put damp material back into the pillow. Regular fluffing helps redistribute the loose foam without changing the total amount inside.

Questions about adjustment

How much fill should I remove?

There is no single amount that fits everyone. Begin with a small handful, compare the feel and repeat gradually. Keep the removed fill so you can reverse the change.

Can I make it firmer by adding more fill?

Returning saved fill makes the pillow fuller and can change how resistant it feels. It does not change the foam material itself. Avoid packing in so much that the pillow no longer feels comfortable.

Can I adjust the Cooling Gel Pillow the same way?

No. The Cooling Gel Pillow has a solid molded core and no removable shredded fill.

Does taking fill out change the pillow’s size?

It changes the amount of fill and the profile. It does not turn a King cover into a Standard/Queen cover.
