What the firmer middle means

The middle base zone is rated 50 IFD, compared with 28 IFD at the head and foot. It offers more resistance to compression within the base, while the gel memory foam layer provides cushioning above it. These component ratings do not make the entire topper a “50 IFD” sleep surface; the layers, your body and the mattress underneath all affect the feel.

Foam specifications: density and IFD

Density describes foam mass per volume, measured here in pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft³). IFD means Indentation Force Deflection and describes resistance to compression under specified test conditions. The two measurements are different: higher density does not automatically mean greater firmness.

Manufacturer-supplied foam specifications
ComponentSpecification
Gel memory foam1.5 inches; approximately 1.8 lb/ft³ density and 13 IFD
Base: head and foot1.5 inches; approximately 1.5 lb/ft³ density; 28 IFD
Base: middle1.5 inches; approximately 1.5 lb/ft³ density; 50 IFD
Total foam depth3 inches

Density values and the memory foam IFD are approximate manufacturer descriptions. IFD is also called ILD (Indentation Load Deflection). Compare ratings only under comparable test conditions; these are component specifications, not a universal comfort scale or a finished-topper test result. Pressure Relief Where Your Body Needs It Most

Pressure can build where your body makes the most contact with your mattress, particularly around the shoulders, hips, and lower back. Our contouring foam responds to your body’s shape to help distribute weight across a larger surface area instead of concentrating it in a few pressure-sensitive areas.

This creates a more comfortable sleep surface without sacrificing support. Whether you’re sleeping on your side, back, or changing positions throughout the night, the topper adapts with you for a more balanced combination of cushioning and stability.

Key Benefits

  • Contours naturally around your body’s curves
  • Helps reduce pressure around shoulders and hips
  • Cushions the lower back without sacrificing support
  • Promotes more even weight distribution
  • Comfortable across multiple sleeping positions
  • Helps reduce pressure caused by an overly firm mattress
  • Creates a more balanced sleep surface

Contouring Comfort Without the “Stuck” Feeling

Not all memory foam feels the same. An overly soft topper can allow your body to sink too deeply, making it difficult to move and potentially reducing the support your mattress provides. Alexa Sleep combines contouring comfort with responsive support for a more balanced feel.

The foam gently conforms to your body while providing enough resistance to keep you comfortably supported. As you move throughout the night, the sleep surface responds with you instead of leaving you feeling trapped inside the foam.

Key Benefits

  • Responsive contouring foam construction
  • Cushions without excessive sinking
  • Supports easier movement throughout the night
  • Balances softness with underlying support
  • Helps maintain a more stable sleeping position
  • Comfortable for combination sleepers
  • Adds plushness without turning your mattress overly soft

Transform Your Mattress Without Replacing It

You don’t necessarily need an entirely new mattress to dramatically improve the way your bed feels. If your current mattress still has a solid foundation but isn’t providing the comfort or support you want, a premium topper can completely change your sleep surface.

The Alexa Sleep Back Support Mattress Topper adds a substantial new comfort and support layer directly above your existing mattress. It’s a simple way to improve pressure relief, contouring, and overall sleep comfort while extending the useful life of a mattress you already own.

Key Benefits

  • Instantly upgrades your existing sleep surface
  • Adds both cushioning and additional support
  • Helps improve the feel of overly firm mattresses
  • Can add structure to mattresses that feel too soft
  • Extends the comfort life of your existing mattress
  • No complicated installation or mattress replacement
  • Ideal for bedrooms, guest rooms, and RV mattresses
  • A cost-effective alternative to replacing your entire bed

Zoned Mattress Topper FAQs

How thick is the Zoned Mattress Topper?
The topper has 3 inches of total foam depth: a 1.5-inch gel memory foam comfort layer over a 1.5-inch base foam layer. It is a two-layer construction, rather than 3 inches of memory foam alone.
What makes this topper zoned?
The base has three firmness zones along its length: 28 IFD at the head, 50 IFD in the middle and 28 IFD at the foot. The middle offers more resistance to compression within the base. A continuous gel memory foam comfort layer sits above all three zones.
What is the difference between foam density and IFD?
Density measures foam mass per volume, commonly in pounds per cubic foot. IFD stands for Indentation Force Deflection and measures resistance to compression under specified test conditions. IFD is also called ILD. A higher-density foam is not automatically firmer, and IFD comparisons require comparable testing conditions.
What are the foam density and firmness specifications?
The gel memory foam is described by the manufacturer as approximately 1.8 lb/ft³ density and 13 IFD. The base foam is approximately 1.5 lb/ft³ density, with 28 IFD head and foot zones and a 50 IFD middle zone. These are component specifications; they do not rate the overall feel of the finished topper.
What is a mattress topper?
A mattress topper is an extra comfort layer placed on top of an existing mattress. The Alexa Sleep Zoned Mattress Topper lets you refresh your bed without replacing the mattress underneath.
Which sizes are available?
Choose from Twin (38 × 75 inches), Twin XL (38 × 80 inches), Full (54 × 75 inches), Queen (60 × 80 inches), Short Queen (60 × 75 inches), King (76 × 80 inches), and Cal King (72 × 84 inches). Measure your mattress before choosing a size.
How do I choose the right size?
Measure the width and length of your mattress in inches and match those dimensions to the size selector. Also check your fitted sheet’s pocket depth to allow for the combined height of your mattress and topper.
What is the difference between Queen and Short Queen?
Both are 60 inches wide. Queen is 80 inches long, while Short Queen is 75 inches long. Choose the length that matches your mattress.
How are King and Cal King different?
King measures 76 × 80 inches. Cal King measures 72 × 84 inches, making it narrower and longer. They are different sizes and should be matched to your mattress measurements.
How do I place the topper on my bed?
Place the topper flat on top of your mattress with the finished sleeping surface facing up. Align the corners, secure the corner straps around the mattress, and use a fitted sheet that accommodates both layers. Follow any setup instructions supplied with your topper.
Can a topper fix a sagging mattress?
A topper changes the comfort of the sleep surface, but it cannot repair a worn-out mattress or an uneven foundation. Check the condition of your mattress and bed base before adding a topper.
How should I care for the topper and its cover?
Follow the care label and the instructions supplied with your topper. Check those instructions before removing or washing the zippered cover, and do not assume that the topper insert is machine washable.

I wanted more cushioning on the surface but also needed good support underneath. This topper gives me both. The center feels firmer and supportive while the top layer provides enough comfort for side sleeping. It has been a noticeable improvement to my mattress.

I’m mostly a stomach sleeper and usually find memory foam toppers too soft. This one has a more balanced feel. It adds some comfort to my mattress while still keeping me from sinking too deeply. Very happy with the overall feel.

I’m always switching between my side and back, so I needed a topper that could handle both. This one has a nice balance of cushioning and support. It feels comfortable without being overly soft, and I’ve really enjoyed the change to my mattress.
